Spiritual Resources
“Ignatian spirituality is not captured in a rule or set of practices or a certain method of praying or devotional observances. It is a spiritual ‘way of proceeding’ that offers a vision of life, an understanding of God, a reflective approach to living, a contemplative form of praying, a reverential attitude to our world, and an expectation of finding God daily.”
David Fleming, SJ
Any brief definition of Ignatian spirituality will necessarily fall short. At its heart, however, Ignatian spirituality is a spirituality of life lived in service to God and others as a follower of Jesus Christ. Those who live their lives out of the Ignatian charism look to find God in the whole of life, in all things. They seek to know and to do God’s will. And they choose to live for the greater glory of God, that God’s truth, beauty, wisdom and power may be known in the world.
Resources for the study of Ignatian spirituality are vast and continue to expand. An excellent place to begin is David Fleming’s book, What is Ignatian Spirituality?, published by Loyola Press. You may also find online resources under the "Links" section on this page.
The “way of proceeding” that Fleming describes, however, is less an object to be studied than an invitation to which a person chooses to respond. Ignatian spirituality flows out of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The Spiritual Exercises help persons to follow Jesus Christ more nearly and to receive his gift of himself more freely so as to make Christ the center of their lives. Ignatian spirituality, therefore, is lived, experienced and practiced.
The Ignatian Spirituality Program at Regis invites all who are drawn to such a “way of proceeding” to join us.
The Ignatian Imagination
The Ignatian Imagination is an occasional publication of the Ignatian Spirituality Program. In it, you will find reflections on prayer and the spiritual life to help you more fully engage in your relationship with God. If there are specific topics you would like to see discussed, please send us your suggestions via email at isp@regis.edu.
