Regis University Partners with AARP for Veterans Day Celebration and Documentary Screening

Regis University’s Military and Veteran Services, Center for the Study of War Experience (CSWE) and Community for Belonging and Equity (CoBE), in partnership with AARP, are proud to announce the Veteran’s Day Celebration and Documentary Screening. This program will honor the contributions of all veterans and recognize the legacy of Latino WWII veteran Dr. Hector P. Garcia, the founder of the American GI Forum, with a screening of Justice for My People.

This event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 11, in the Mountain View Room in Claver Hall at Regis University’s Denver Campus. Appetizers and refreshments will be served throughout the event. Additionally, speakers from AARP, the CSWE and the Regis community will be joining the event to recognize and commemorate this Veteran’s Day.

Justice for My People is a documentary chronicling the life of veteran and activist Dr. Hector P. Garcia. Garcia was a refugee from the Mexican Revolution, physician, decorated war veteran, civil rights activist and presidential advisor who dedicated himself to the Mexican American civil rights movement. After his service in World War II, Garcia was confronted by the reality of life for his Mexican American community: school segregation, poor quality of life and systemic discrimination.

By establishing the American GI Forum in 1948, Garcia uplifted and empowered Mexican American veterans to combat nationwide injustices. Though he faced threats to his wellbeing and endured personal losses, Garcia refused to be deterred. This inspiring film highlights Garcia’s contributions to American history.
