A heartfelt tribute to service: Quilts of Valor presented in ceremony at Regis University
The soft, vibrant folds of a quilt carry more than warmth — they hold gratitude, honor, and a profound recognition of sacrifice. Since 2003, the Quilts of Valor Foundation has been providing handmade quilts to U.S. military service members and veterans, offering comfort and appreciation to those who have served. The quilts are more than fabric and thread; they symbolize the nation’s acknowledgment of the individuals who have safeguarded freedom and security. Over the past two decades, the organization has awarded more than 400,000 quilts to veterans across all six branches of the military.
At Regis, this tradition came alive during a moving ceremony that honored several members of its community with Quilts of Valor. The recipients included veterans and military-affiliated staff and students whose service and dedication continue to inspire.
“The military has always been rooted in a shared commitment to protecting the security of the United States, its allies, and ensuring victory when called upon,” said Fletcher Brown, a U.S. Army veteran and director of Military and Veteran Services at Regis University. “It takes a rare and selfless individual to make the sacrifices required to safeguard the freedoms we enjoy every day. While we may never fully understand the experiences and transformations our veterans underwent during their service, we can honor them by welcoming them home, supporting them, and expressing our gratitude whenever we can.”
For Regis Provost and U.S. Army veteran Jake Bucher, the ceremony was a moment of profound reflection. “I admittedly didn’t know what to expect with the Quilt of Valor after I was nominated for inclusion. But as soon as the ceremony started and I learned of the history and purpose of this group, it allowed me to reflect on my own service, and I was immediately humbled and honored to be included,” he said. “Seeing our Regis colleagues and students receive their quilts was a reminder of the diverse and impactful contexts each member of our community brings to our work. As a veteran, I am grateful for the recognition, and as Provost, I am grateful for how Regis takes care of our active military, veterans and military-affiliated folks.”
Mike Redmond, associate vice president of the Regis Physical Plant and a U.S. Air Force Veteran, echoed these sentiments. “I was truly honored to receive the quilt and was overwhelmed and humbled by the passion and commitment the ladies of this foundation go through to create such a beautiful work of art for others,” he said. “It also reminded me of how many in our country appreciate the service of veterans. Millions of veterans meld back into society after service, and it is wonderful to have this reflection so many years after I retired.”
The ceremony deeply moved Physical Plant team member and U.S. Army veteran Kevin Jenson. As a veteran, the experience of being honored resonated in a way few other moments had. “This is one of the most important awards I have ever been given,” he shared. “Seeing people do things for veterans — it touched me so much. We don’t get that very often, and I am extremely thankful for the quilt.”
The Quilts of Valor Foundation and its extraordinary members have shown through each stitch the immense power of gratitude. These quilts serve as a tangible reminder that the sacrifices of those who serve are never forgotten.
“We recognize these extraordinary individuals who have not only served their country but continue their mission of service here at Regis University,” Brown said. “Their dedication is truly deserving of a quilt of comfort as a heartfelt thank you.”
In honoring these individuals, the Regis community reaffirmed its commitment to supporting veterans and military-affiliated members. The Quilts of Valor ceremony was not just a celebration of service but a reminder of the values that unite and uplift us all.
