Reflecting and Proceeding: the Consortium for Catholic Higher Education in Prison
During the Weekend of Oct. 20, the Jesuit Prison Education Network teamed up with Notre Dame Programs for Education in Prison (NDPEP) to launch a Catholic consortium for college in prison, an innovative network of partnerships between Catholic universities and Departments of Correction in states across the country. Committed to providing transformative education to incarcerated women and men as well as college credit instruction for correctional staff, representatives from these institutions converged for three days on the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
The gathering provided an opportunity to share best practices and resources for college-in-prison programs. Conversations focused on topics ranging from program models and education pathways to facility operations and data collection. The aim was to build support networks and cultivate a community of shared wisdom, experience and strategies to enhance and sustain college programs inside prison facilities across the country.
A collaborative spirit won the day as participants departed not only with ideas for their respective programs but with companions in the work and a shared sense of mission.
