Empowering lives: Physical Therapy alumna shares her Surge Scholar experience
In the realm of physical therapy, the Rizing Tide Foundation’s Surge Scholarship stands as a beacon of recognition, highlighting the exceptional potential of individuals to shape local communities. For Regis alumna Lena Parker (’22), a Surge Scholar for the 2023 Cycle, the significance of this honor transcends mere financial support.
"Being a recipient of this scholarship means that industry leaders see and recognize my potential to make an impact on our local communities through the craft of physical therapy,” she said.
The roots of Parker’s success trace back to the leadership thread woven into the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curriculum at Regis. This foundation propelled Parker into early career leadership roles, showcasing the practical application of academic insights.
"Earning this scholarship invigorates my passion to create more good in the world through physical therapy,” she said.
Parker is set to complete her residency in the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program at California State University-Long Beach in August 2024.
She plans to stay in Southern California, inspired by the opportunity to specialize in orthopedic rehab for athletes. "Recently I have been treating more young athletes in residency, particularly high-level tennis, track, and cross-country athletes," Parker said. The focus is on managing chronic pain conditions, contributing to the well-being of athletes in the vibrant sports community.
Reflecting on her time at Regis, the impact of shared values and the concept of cura personalis, or caring for the whole person, emerges as a transformative force. Parker expressed gratitude, "Having a strong value system is a seemingly simple concept, but it's amazing how much positive change can occur when everybody believes in shared values."
Notable memories include Parker’s involvement with PT Moves Me, an APTA-led initiative addressing diversity and representation in the PT field. Parker is passionate about promoting equity in physical therapy, recognizing the barriers faced by students from marginalized communities.
For aspiring PT students, she offered practical advice, likening the career to that of a professional athlete. "Eat right, sleep right, find balance, exercise, and have some fun," Parker advised. The overarching message is clear: continuous learning and maintaining personal well-being are essential. "You can only give your best if you are your best, she said.
The Surge Scholarship not only recognizes past achievements but serves as a powerful catalyst for Parker's future contributions to the transformative field of physical therapy.
