A letter in response to the Supreme Court's decision from President Salvador D. Aceves, Ed.D.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to overturn the use of race-conscious admissions practices at higher education institutions. While the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action creates significant access challenges for our students of color, legal framework changes do not alter Regis University’s commitment to diversity and access as a strength and core value. We believe that this decision overlooks the importance of racial diversity in meeting our society's needs, which needs diverse leaders and leaders who value and understand diverse perspectives.

As a Jesuit Catholic university, Regis seeks to build a more just and humane world through transformative education at the frontiers of faith, reason, and culture. Our mission calls on us to deliver a faith-based education that prepares all our students to engage and succeed in an increasingly diverse society and to provide opportunities and support to the marginalized among us. A Jesuit Catholic education is a vehicle for social mobility and a tool for justice.

This decision does not change what we have always done. We reaffirm our commitment to fostering an inclusive community of caring and to recruit and retain a diverse campus for the benefit of all. Through our holistic admissions process, talented and gifted students from a wide range of backgrounds who demonstrate courage and resilience will continue to shape our student body. Our recent designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution, in concert with many other initiatives and efforts, will help Regis University continue to support groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education and reflect the city, state, and regional communities we serve.

Kindly,

Salvador D. Aceves, Ed.D.
President
