Regis University's Fellowship in Optimal Aging is the first of its kind. The Fellowship in Optimal Aging is grounded in evidence-based practice principles and embraces the APTA's Vision 2020 Statement.
The Optimal Aging Fellowship is an extension of the current Transition DPT program at Regis, and as such, physical therapists prepared at the BS or MS degree levels must take the combined Transition DPT + Fellowship. However, the program may also appeal to physical therapists that are PhD, DSc or DPT prepared. All interested applicants to the Optimal Aging Fellowship program will need to be Geriatric Certified Specialist (GCS) eligible, and therefore have at least one and a half years of full-time clinical experience in the area of geriatric physical therapy.
Similar to other courses in the Transition DPT program, the four management courses are three-credit courses, presented in eight-week terms, primarily online, although each management course will have an intensive weekend component. Candidates in the fellowship program will have additional requirements during these courses which include "virtual rounds" where students provide case problems in a structural format and discuss diagnosis, prognosis, & intervention strategies with fellowship faculty.
Student completing the Transition DPT program at Regis prior to applying to the Fellowship in Optimal Aging should complete the majority of the TDPT coursework prior to applying to the Fellowship. Two management courses completed as part of the Regis Transition Doctor of Physical Therapy program requirements can also be used to fulfill six semester hours of the 18 semester hour fellowship certificate.
