Jean-Francois Regis, Jesuit priest and saint, was born on January 31, 1597 in south France. He entered the Society of Jesus at age 19, and went to work teaching at Le Puy. He was ordained a priest in 1630, and continued teaching at the college. His main objective there was to keep the 15-year-olds from killing each other in duels over petty arguments.
Beyond teaching, John Francis worked with the poor. He gathered food and clothing for them, fought for their rights, put pressure on local merchants to provide jobs, and preached. His most famous work was with the prostitutes, whom he took from their "places of employment," established safe homes for them, and found them new jobs.
John Francis also went into the poor mountain towns to preach and offer Mass. One Christmas, on one of these journeys into the mountains, he became ill, probably with pneumonia, and died on New Year's Eve in 1640.
St. John Francis Regis was declared a saint in 1738. Regis Societies were formed throughout France, helping the poor by regularizing marriages (thus legitimizing thousands of children) and teaching in rural areas. Today, Regis' name lives on: there is a Lake St. Regis and Mount St. Regis (upper New York), Regis High School (Manhattan and Denver), St. Regis Hotels, St. Regis apartments, St. Regis swimming pools and Regis hairstylists.
