Diversity at Regis University

At Regis University, the term "diversity" affirms our faith-inspired commitment to build an inclusive community that values the dignity and contributions of all our members. In this community, human differences thrive in a learning environment characterized by the Jesuit traditions of mutual respect and the pursuit of justice. Age, gender, race/ethnicity, class, disability, sexual orientation, religion, and other human differences contribute to the richness and vitality of our living community.

Why Do We Value Diversity: A Message from President Michael Sheeran, S.J.

Strategic Planning for an Inclusive Community

In 2005-2006, the Office of Diversity completed a strategic planning process that defined the scope and dimensions of diversity work in five areas. A needs assessment, including a written survey, focus groups, and individual interviews clarified specific objectives in each of the following key areas.

The five components of the plan are:

Campus Climate
Goal: to create an environment of respect and understanding that celebrates the gifts of everyone.

Curriculum Development
Goal: to create a curriculum and pedagogy responsive to a multicultural world and a diverse student body by integrating themes of social justice and diversity as mutually supportive concepts.

Recruitment
Goal: to increase the diversity of students, faculty, and staff through recruitment, retention, and professional development.

Community Connections
Goal: to build relationships between Regis University and the Denver community, especially the immediate neighborhood.

Management
Goal: to demonstrate the University's commitment to enhancing diversity.

The purpose of this Strategic Plan for an Inclusive Community is to expand upon the University’s diversity initiatives with specific goals and objectives in order to lay a firm foundation for the University’s continuing evolution as a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment for all who learn, work, and live at Regis University. (Note: Work on aspects of this plan are well underway. A status report for 2007 will document progress to date.)

Diversity Dialogues

Members of the Regis University community are invited to partipate in monthly Diversity Dialogues. The dialogue is an open exchange of ideas, an effort to understand each other’s ideas about diversity, not to debate. The goal of each dialogue is not to necessarily make a decision or reach consensus. Rather, the dialogue encourages everyone to learn about diversity at Regis University, explore new issues and build deeper meanings about important issues. There are no right or wrong answers and all perspectives are welcome.

Diversity Dialogues seek to:

  • be an outlet to address concerns regarding working and being part of the Regis University community in a safe environment with facilitated conversation
  • allow participants to come to a deeper understanding of one's own and others' perspectives and concerns.
  • build awareness about diversity issues both within the Regis University community and our broader society
