Overview

The Environmental Studies Program at Regis is an interdisciplinary program that offers two degrees and a minor. Students take a variety of courses through different departments to gain both the breadth and depth necessary to solve complex environmental problems. The ENVS program promotes critical thinking, qualitative and quantitative reasoning, problem solving, and writing skills. Both local and global issues are emphasized in exploring environmental solutions for the common good of humanity and of the earth.

Mission Statement

Interest in environmental issues, such as resource depletion, habitat destruction, biological extinction, global economic development, and urbanization, is expanding. The Environmental Studies Program focuses on these and other environmental issues from an interdisciplinary perspective.

UNDER DEVELOPMENT

We are currently developing this page of the website. Please check back soon to learn more about the distinguished faculty members who contribute to our program.

Please contact Dr. John Sakulich, ENVS Director, for more information on the Environmental Studies program. His office is in Science Building, Room 222. He can be reached via telephone at 303.458.4093 or email.

Below are some resources for graduate study in environmental science and studies.

Advanced Degrees in Environmental Studies

Environmental Science Degree

Obtaining this degree can help propel research skills and provide opportunities for government stipends and grants.

Environmental Studies Degree

Research skills will develop, although opportunities for stipends and grants will be more limited.

Online Resources

A friendly search engine for finding the right graduate school as an ENVS major can be found at Peterson's guide.

A search engine for Ph.D and Master's programs can be found in the online resource of Gradschools.com.

Master's Degree

There are two types of Master's degrees: Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS). Usually these degrees take two or three years to complete, and the degree may, or may not, require a written Master's thesis containing original research. Scholarships, grants, jobs, and teaching positions at the institution you are attending are often available when completing a Master's in Environmental Science.

Ph.D. or Doctor of Philosophy

This degree can range from 4-8 years for completion. A Ph.D. will always require a dissertation of original research. It is the highest degree you can earn. Some students complete a Master's degree first, and others skip the Master's and begin a Ph.D. program right after completing their undergraduate degree. What you choose to do is usually based on your career goals. As in a Master's program, scholarships, grants, jobs, and teaching positions are often available when completing a Ph.D. in Environmental Science.

Students with ENVS degrees are working in nonprofits, environmental consulting firms, government, forestry, botany, wildlife biology, conservation biology, geology, transportation, teaching, community organizing, politics and urban planning. The degree may also lead to graduate study in science, geography, sociology, economincs, journalism, law, environmental health, international relations, ecotheology, or political science. There are over a hundred organizations in the local region working on issues of environmental sustainability and thousands more around the world.

Internships

There are many opportunities for internships for Environmental Studies and Science students. Some students have interned for:

  • Denver Urban Gardens
  • Denver Zoo
  • Denver Botanical Gardens
  • Denver Aquarium
  • The United States Geological Survey (USGS)

There are additional internship opportunities across Colorado and beyond that can be accessed through the Academic Internship Program.
