Riffs/2012 Rhythm in Time Photo Exhibit by Scott Engel

Donnie Veasey | January 02, 2013

Riffs/ 2012 Rhythm in Time, featuring the photography of Coaldale, Colo., resident Scott Engel, will be on exhibit from Jan. 15 thru Feb. 15 in the Regis University O’Sullivan Art Gallery at the University’s North Denver (Lowell) campus.

An opening reception is Jan. 24 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and a gallery talk by Engel is Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. “Riff, as defined in Jazz terms, is short rhythmic, melodic, or harmonic figures repeated to form a structural framework,” Engel writes. “Embracing and appreciating this concept is the framework for this exhibition. An observer may consider one photograph at a time, groups of three to five (or more) photographs or all of the photographs forming one piece with repeated and extended photographic concepts and formal applications.”

Engel, who earned an MFA from the University of Colorado and a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, has an extensive professional history in the photographic and art world. Most recently he spent more than 20 years as a coordinator/instructor of photography at Arapahoe Community College, including several years serving as chair of that school’s art department. He has worked as a photography instructor for the University of Colorado and the Community College of Denver, was a photographer for Boulder Monthly Magazine, an artist-in-residence at the Colorado Council on the Arts and Humanities, and was director of the Fine Arts Center University Memorial Center at CU.

Among his numerous awards are an original work commissioned through the City and County of Denver Public Art Program, Denver Convention Center Hotel, 2004-05; Colorado Educator of the Year (Awarded to the Arapahoe Community College Art Department Faculty), Colorado Art Education Association, 1997; and Award of Merit, Colorado Art Education Exhibition, 1993.
O’Sullivan Art Gallery hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Thursdays 2 to 8 p.m.

For more information, contact Robert St. John, gallery and studio manager, at 303-964-3634 or rstjohn@regis.edu
