Senior puts business know-how to work enhancing a Denver cultural tradition
Sometimes all it takes is one good idea – well that and a leader willing to invest the time and energy to make it a reality. Peter Pham, a senior majoring in business administration (emphasis in marketing and minor in history), has eagerly embraced that role. As a result, he is helping build on the success of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, an enormously popular Denver event held each July that highlights Colorado’s rich Asian Pacific American heritage.
Regis.edu recently talked with Pham about his idea, his Regis experience and his future.
What is your role with the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival?
I first got involved with the festival in 2012 through an organization I was volunteering with. I was asked to become more involved and for this year proposed the idea for the Lion Dance Extravaganza. This event is a competition involving multiple local groups of lion dancers and is designed to educate people about the dance and its cultural significance.
How has Regis supported you in this venture?
I have worked closely with Marketing and Communications, Student Activities, the diversity office and others. They have provided me with input, ideas and skills that I can use for the Lion Dance Extravaganza and beyond.
Tell me about your campus involvement. What drives that interest?
I am currently director of marketing for student activities. I have led marketing and public relations for the Asian Student Alliance and served as that group’s president for two years. I find “men and women in service of others” is a model for my life and interests. I feel the most satisfaction when I can look back and see that I built something and it is improving.
What are your career ambitions, and how will these experiences help move you toward your goals?
In the future, I plan to work for a marketing group or firm to gain more experience. Additionally, I would like to open a business, maybe in Vietnam. My experiences with marketing and my other involvements on campus have helped me hone my marketing and business skills to serve others with quality and compassion. In short, I plan to use my experiences to serve others wherever I may be.
