FAQ

How do I sign up for a test?

Find full details on how to sign up for a test. Registrations are accepted via the online registration form. We are unable to accept registations over the phone.

What exams are offered?

Competency based exams offered at Regis are CLEP, DSST, CHALLENGE and National League for Nursing (NLN). Challenge exams are available only to Regis students. We also offer the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), the TEAS exam, and proctor services for exams requiring a proctor. Please contact the Testing Center to make arrangements for proctored exams with a time limit that exceeds four hours. A longer time period may be available by prior arrangement only and is subject to additional proctor fees.

Students should always check with their academic advisor to determine how the testing options meet their degree plan requirements.

Place and Praxis examinations for teacher licensure

The State of Colorado is now allowing Teacher Education students to take either the PLACE or the PRAXIS exam. Neither of these exams is available in the Regis Testing Center. Contact your academic advisor to find out which choice is best for you.

If you are earning a teaching license in Colorado or Wyoming through our School for Education and Counseling, please contact the school or your advisor for the most current information. Requirements do change and the faculty and staff in the School for Education and Counseling will know the most recent information.

What is the cost?

ONLY credit card payment is acceptable for testing fees.

  • $115.00 CLEP - This is a split fee: A non-refundable/non-transferable $35.00 registration fee to Regis, and the $80.00 balance to CLEP on exam day via credit card.
  • $115.00 DSST - This is a split fee: A non-refundable/non-transferable $35.00 registration fee to Regis, and the $80.00 balance to DSST on exam day via credit card. Please note: DSST does NOT accept Discover as a form of payment for the remaining balance.

  • $70.00 NLN Achievement exams
  • $70.00 Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
  • $70.00 TEAS - This is a split fee: A non-refundable/non-transferable $35.00 registration fee to Regis, and the $35.00 balance to TEAS on exam day via credit card.
  • $35.00 Proctor exams.
  • $35.00 Reschedule or cancellation fee for all exams.

What is the difference between a CLEP and a DSST (Dantes) exam?

Both CLEP and DSST exams offered at all Regis University Testing Center locations are computer-based exams. CLEP gives students 90 minutes to finish the exam (except for College Composition, which is two hours long.). DSST gives students two hours to complete the exam. Results/scores are displayed immediately after the exam is completed (except for the CLEP College Composition). There is no penalty for incorrect answers. Students should answer ALL questions on both CLEP and DSST exams. Extended time is allowed for CLEP and DSST exams if the student has a documented disability. Contact the Testing Center in advance for further details.

Can I reschedule or cancel an exam if i change my mind?

Yes, students can reschedule or cancel an exam. The $35 registration fee portion from ALL exams is non-refundable/non-transferable. Once you pay to register for an exam, refunds cannot be given for the registration fee. The exam cannot be transferred to another date or time without a charge of $35. The test title may not be changed without a fee of $35.

How do I determine which exam to take?

Students should consult with their academic advisor to determine which exams will fulfill their degree plan requirements. Only Regis students can take the CHALLENGE EXAMS.

How do I study?

The CLEP and DSST study guides name reference textbooks that were being used at the time the exams were being developed. Appropriate textbooks for study are not limited to those lists. You may reference either the current edition of the listed titles through the link, to the left, or find textbooks currently being used for a college course of the same title. Begin by checking the textbook content against the content outlined on the first page of the fact sheet. Textbooks can be found at the library, campus bookstores or from a variety of websites that sell new and used textbooks.

CLEP - Consult the Official CLEP study guide which is available in many bookstores for approximately $25.00 or in most libraries. This book contains sample questions and references for all CLEP exams. Free study guides without sample questions are also available at the CLEP web site. For a small fee, study guides with questions can be purchased directly from the CLEP website.
DSST - Current study guides are available from this web site or you may purchase a more complete guide from the DSST website. New: DSST has donated several of their study guides to the Regis library and they are available at the Denver (Main) campus library.
NLN - Using the exam description you may find a college level text to study.
MAT - A study guide can be downloaded directly from the Miller Analogies web site at no cost. Please use the link to MAT to do so.
CHALLENGE - (for Regis Students only) These study guides are available from this web site or you may request them from the Testing Center.

For students who live outside Colorado, see the list of testing centers on the CLEP & DSST (Dantes) website listed above.

Videos: Ethics in America and Race to Save the Planet (Environment & Humanity) videotapes are available for limited check out to Regis students. Please call Media Services at the Lowell Campus at 303-458-4265 for videotape information.
Student Recommended: So many students have recommended this resource, that we decided to include a link to it. For a small fee, you can purchase a very condensed study guide for many of the subjects covered by CLEP, DSST and NLN exams. These guides are available at the bookstore, or can be purchased directly from the publisher at Quick Study Academic Charts. These materials are not endorsed by CLEP, NLN or DSST.

Use caution when looking for CLEP and DSST study guides. There are many versions that are not endorsed by CLEP or DSST. Some students find these publications helpful, and others do not. Always check the official DSST and CLEP fact sheets to see what content will be covered on the exams. There are links to those through the Exam List & Study Guide.

How long should I prepare to take an exam?

The answer to this question may vary greatly from individual to individual, however, most candidates find that some type of test preparation is helpful. Ideally, you are selecting exams for material with which you have experience.

Most people who take these exams do so to show that they have already learned through life experience the key material taught in a college course. Many of them need only a quick review to be assured that they have not forgotten some of what they once learned, and to fill in some of the gaps in their knowledge of the subject. Others feel that they need a thorough review and spend several weeks studying. Some people take Credit by Exams as a kind of "final examination" for independent study of a subject instead of the college course. This last group requires significantly more study than those who only need to review.

How do I know when I'm ready to take the exam?

Begin by reading the test information and content listed in the study guide. As you read through the topics listed, ask yourself how much you know about each one. Note the terms, names, and symbols that are mentioned, and conclude whether if you are familiar with them. This will give you a quick overview of how much you know about the subject. If you are familiar with nearly all the material then minimal review of the subject could be all that is necessary. If less than half of it is familiar, additional study is substantial, so you are prepared in doing well on the exam.

After reviewing the content provided in the study guide, if you find that you need extensive review, delay answering the sample questions until you have done some additional reading on the subject. If you prefer to complete the sample questions before reviewing the material, while planning to look for the answers as you study, this is not considered as a good assessment of your ability. If you think you are familiar with most of the test material, try to answer the sample questions. Check your answers against the answer key and if you answered nearly all the questions correctly, you probably do not need to study the subject extensively. If only half of the sample questions you answered are correct, you will probably benefit from more extensive reading in the subject and thorough study of one or more college level textbooks.

What should I do the day of the exam?

Arrive on time and allow time to find parking and the testing room. Bring two forms of ID - one form must be a government issued ID (i.e. driver's license or passport). The second form of identification can be a student ID, insurance card or employee ID. Do not bring children with you. Note: No electronic devices are allowed in the testing room including cell phones, pagers, or laptops.

How long does it take to receive my results?

CLEP - You will receive your results after completing the exam (with the exception of the College Composition exam.)
CHALLENGE - Results will be mailed to you in 2-4 weeks
DSST - You will receive your results after completing the exam
MAT - You will receive your results after completing the test
NLN - Results will be mailed to you in 3-4 weeks
TEAS - You will receive your results after completing the test

When will my credits appear on my Regis transcript?

For CLEP and DSST exams, it takes a minimum of 4-6 weeks from the date of the exam for the credits to appear on the student's WebAdvisor transcript.

SCORE RESULTS MAY NOT BE SHARED OVER THE PHONE DUE TO CONFIDENTIALITY REGULATIONS.

What if I do not receive a passing score?

Exams are graded on a pass/no pass basis. If you receive a "no pass" on a CLEP exam, you may take the exam again in 6 months and nothing is recorded on your transcript. If you receive a "no pass" on a DSST exam, you may take the exam again in 3 months and nothing is recorded on your transcript. If you do not pass a CHALLENGE, the "no pass" will appear on your transcript and you are required to take the class. Students may repeat a NLN exam no more than once and must wait two weeks before re-testing. There is no waiting period for retaking the computer-based MAT exam. A retest admission ticket is required for retaking a paper/pencil MAT exam.

How do I read my CLEP/DSST exam results?

The standard score is your score. The "ACE recommended" score is a guide. In order to pass the exam, your score should be equal to or above the ACE recommended score.

Do I need to write an essay when I take the CLEP & DSST exam?

Regis does not require the "with essay" version of any DSST exam. Regis students are required to complete the essay portion of the CLEP College Composition exam.

Can I use a calculator?

There are a few exams that allow students to use a non-programmable calculator. CLEP and DSST exams requiring a calculator, have a calculator loaded in the program. CLEP does not allow an outside calculator. DSST does give students the option of bringing a calculator. Note that the calculator must be a commercially-produced handheld, battery or solar-operated, silent nonprogrammable calculator that does not have either a full alphabetic keyboard or graphical display. Check with the Testing Center to see if a calculator is allowed for the exam you are taking.

What if I want my test score to be sent to another institution?

CLEP - There is a drop down menu within the introduction of your exam. You will selelct the university's/institution's name within the score recipient field on the computer.
DSST - BE SURE TO BRING the institution code number of your school on the day of the exam. To look up this code on the DSST website click here Locate an Institution
