To Err is Human—an Institute of Medicine piece reveals “as many as 98,000 people die in any given year from medical errors that occur in hospitals. That’s more than die from motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer or AIDS—three causes that receive far more public attention-or akin to a 747 going down every day.”

Responding to growing industry demand to improve patient safety, Regis University has teamed with several leading health organizations to create a Post-Bachelor’s Certificate in Quality and Patient Safety. This certificate provides students a base of quality improvement theory, the tools to measure statistical change and the leadership to implement patient safety/performance improvement initiatives. Thus, improving the quality of health care received from senior management to daily beside care. The program includes 12 credit hours at the graduate level and can be taken in conjunction with the Master’s in Health Service Administration or as a standalone certificate. One or two pre-requisite courses may be required depending on the student’s prior professional and/or academic background.

Degree: Graduates are awarded a Certificate in Quality and Patient Safety.

Online Option:  Flexible format allows you to log in anytime, day or night as you complete weekly assignments.  Each class lasts eight weeks allowing you to progress quickly. No campus visits are required for online students.

Start Dates: Spring (January), Summer (May), Fall (August)

HSA 624 - Quality Improvement in Health Care Set

Provides a basic understanding of the history and theory of Quality Management techniques, tools and principles as applied in various health care settings. The interpretation and analysis of health care data as it relates to quality, safety, risk management, productivity, reimbursement and administrative decision-making is examined and practiced.. Emphasizes the ongoing use of objective data and feedback to improve processes, systems and patient outcomes. The graduate component extends foundational knowledge of quality and safety processes through additional readings, case analysis and/or applied project work. Prerequisite(s): Graduate standing. HSA 670 - Biostatistics & Health Data Analysis

Examines skills and knowledge necessary to manage and analyze biomedical data. Reviews statistics used for decision-making, population health assessment, and inferential research analysis. Uses common statistical software to conduct analysis, interpret results and draw conclusions. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor required.

HSA 672 - Managing Patient Safety & Org. Risk

Examines practical and ethical dimensions of patient care and organizational leadership within the context of patient safety and risk management. Identifies common concepts and applicable tools in risk management and quality improvement. Investigates the role of professional codes, regulatory requirements, the legal environment, practice standards, institutional policies and procedures, organizational culture and societal norms in managing patient safety and organizational risk. Students gain competency in the identification, measurement, analysis, and response to patient safety issues and organizational risk.

HSA 674 - Current/Emerg Thrs in Quality/Pat Safty

Provides an opportunity to develop and lead an initiative in patient quality, safety and/or risk in a health care setting. Emphasis is on the ability to lead a project and gain an overview of the quality improvement and patient safety activities in various health care facilities.
