Get the most out of your Academic Internship Program experience by using the techniques and questions below.
- Develop an organizational chart that describes your particular company/organization. Where does your unit or deptartment reside in this chart? Who works there? What are the educational, professional, and skills backgrounds that the people who work in your area possess? Define one of the jobs that someone has in your department that you would like to have someday. What skills, qualifications and education would you need in order to obtain this type of position?
- Who are the clients/customers served at your site? What methods of communication are used in order to reach these people? What kinds of marketing, sales, advertising or other forms of communication are used? Create a portfolio “audit” of all written forms of marketing, both internal and external, that your organization uses.
- Budget and financial structure of your organization: Where does the money come from to operate your organization? How is the company structured financially? Interview the controller or top budget personnel to get a clearer picture of the financial design of your company. Is there an annual report that is public? Read it, then analyze and summarize key points of this document.
- What is the salary range for top management, mid-level, and entry-level employees in this field? Do a salary survey on the Internet to determine the salaries that employees in this line of work can typically expect. Is your survey regional or national? How do salaries in Denver compare to those in other parts of the United States?
- How are decisions made in your organization? How would you characterize the management style of the leaders in the company? What is the leadership style of your direct supervisor? If you have taken the Myers Briggs or other personality or style indicators, what do you think might be the styles of those who work closely with you? How does your style fit (or not fit) with the rest of your group? What recommendations would you have to enhance the interpersonal communication within your area or department?
- Information/Systems: How is information processed at your internship site? Do a systems analysis of your organization, including an inventory of software and hardware. What recommendations would you make to top management that would be helpful for the future?
- What are future trends in your field? Read three articles from journals, trade publications, and Internet sources that pertain to your field. How do these articles on the future trends in your field compare with your experience at your internship? On a scale of one to 10, with 10 being cutting edge, how does your organization measure up?
- What kinds of ethical issues have you noticed at your internship site? How are diversity and gender issues addressed where you work? How many women and people of color are in top management positions? What is the mission statement of your organization? How are the mission at Regis and your internship site’s mission the same? How are they different? Write about an issue at work and how you would propose solving it. Is the culture at your organization “inclusive” or “exclusive”?
