Something New is Brewing at Regis University

Continuing the long-standing tradition of Catholic beer brewing, Regis University is proud to offer a Certificate in Applied Craft Brewing. With support from local brewers serving on our Professional Brewing Advisory Board, we've concocted a hands-on program that will equip students with the skills to become master brewers and certified beer judges, or simply improve their home or craft brewery skills.

The Applied Craft Brewing certificate is comprised of 16 semester hours, with completion in about a 12-month period. Courses will be held in the evenings, perfect for those looking to refine their skills as master brewers or break into the rapidly growing craft beer industry. Course topics include:

Biology of Brewing: Students explore the microbial basis of brewing, including diversity, nutrition, reproduction, macro and micronutrient metabolism, and culture techniques of yeast and other fermenting microbes. Also discusses the basic biology of barley and hops.

Chemistry of Brewing: Students explore the chemistry of brewing practice. This course includes discussion of malt, wort, and beer analysis and the theory and practice of carbonation.

Business of Craft Brewing: Students explore the merchandising and operations of micro brewing, with specific focus on finances, marketing, brewing policies and regulations, and developing a business plan

Brewing Practicum: The program concludes with a supervised practical experience at a brewery or brewing-related internship site where students apply program coursework.

Regis University is the only college or university in the Denver metro area to offer a course in craft brewing.

Space is limited! All students must meet the following requirements before enrolling in the Certificate for Applied Craft Brewing courses:

  • Students must be 21 years of age by the beginning of their first program course
  • One semester of college level biology or a passing score on a Biology College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam
  • One semester of college level chemistry or a passing score on a Chemistry CLEP exam
  • One semester of college level mathematics, a passing score on a College Mathematics CLEP exam, or a passing score on the Regis Applied Brewing Mathematics placement exam
  • 2.5 college grade point average (or Program Director permission, for cases of students without collegiae coursework and only CLEP credit or special cases)
  • Official transcripts showing prerequisite coursework
  • Letter of intent outling your interest and goals in the craft brewing industry
  • Criminal Background Check: As a condition of your enrollment, you must pass a criminal background check. Regis University will send Certiphi background check information to all admitted students. Proof of criminal background check from current employer may be accepted.

CLEP exams can be completed at the Regis University Testing Center.

All students are required to provide proof of health insurance.  A $40 fee is due with application. Application fee will be waived if received prior to June 15, 2014.  A $350 deposit is due once a student is accepted into the program.
