M.Ed. Instructional Technology

Degree Overview

Ideal for those who already possess a teaching license and for professionals seeking additional credentials, graduates of our M.Ed. with an emphasis in Instructional Technology are not only knowledgeable in technology, but have a solid grasp of education and sound learning principles.

Current teachers not wishing to complete an entire Master of Education degree can take up to 9 credit hours as a non-degree seeking student. Plus, our Teacher Education program is nationally approved through the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC).

Licensed educators and paraprofessionals are eligible to receive a 10% preferred tuition discount for all Teacher Education courses at CPS. Contact an enrollment counselor at 800.944.7667 for details.

Total Degree Requirements: 30 credit hours
Foundational course requirements: 21 credit hours
Degree electives: 6 credit hours (students may choose two courses from pre-existing Education courses selected in consultation with their faculty advisor)
Capstone course requirement: 3 credit hours

Double and Second Specializations
Double Specialization
Students are encouraged to complete their M.Ed. degree with a double specialization. Requirements must be completed for each specialization selected, including all elective credits. Overlapping courses will be considered, though a minimum of 18 additional credits unique to the second specialization is required. Final requirements for the double specialization will be determined by your faculty advisor. Upon completion of all requirements, the degree and both specializations are posted to your official transcript and diploma.

Second Specialization
Students who have already graduated with their M.Ed. degree and wish to return for a second specialization from the non-licensure program must begin by submitting an application for readmission. Upon readmission, all requirements must be completed for the second specialization, including all elective credits. Overlapping course work from the student's original degree/specialization will be considered, though a minimum of 18 credits unique to the second specialization is required. Additionally, courses taken more than six years prior to the date of readmission may not be accepted. Final requirements for the second specialization will be determined by your faculty advisor. Upon completion of all requirements, the second specialization is posted to your official transcript and a certificate for the second specialization is awarded to you.

EDTC 600 - Pedagogical Prac in Instr Tech

Introduction to pedagogy and instructional technology. Focuses on universal design, media literacy, and begins the electronic portfolio that will be used to collect artifacts for the final capstone course.

EDTC 601 - Virtual Collab and Commun

Exploration of Web 2.0, social networking and virtual reality. Examines copyright, assessment, and instructional methods regarding technology in schools and classrooms. Includes an introduction to online teaching and learning.

Studies the process of solving instructional problems by analyzing and applying instructional design models and principles to meet educational and training goals in both K12 education, higher education, and corporate education.

EDTC 603 - Web Dev for Educational Use

Examines principles and techniques for designing and developing Web-based learning enviornments. Topics include authoring software, usability issues, accessibility, creative commons, visual literacy, universal design, copyright, and online teaching and learning.

EDTC 605 - Multimedia

Examines principles and techniques for developing and evaluating use of multimedia in learning enviornments. Topics include development, delivery, universal design, assistive technology, open source, audio, video and graphic creation and editing, creative commons, and accessibility.

EDTC 610 - Instruc Tech Capstone Project

Synthesis of work and projects completed throughout the IT degree program. An electronic protfolio will be developed showcasing work completed to meet NETS-T standards and 21st Century Learning Skills.

EDTC 614 - Integrating Technology Into Curriculum

Focuses on effective strategies and best practices for integrating technology into curriculum. Explores emerging technologies and their use in the classroom. Examines educational theory, technology integration, and administrative considerations and skills related to technology.

Concentrates on designing, developing, and assessing leading multimedia instructional tools. Includes exploration of enhanced uses of multimedia including audio, video, and animation. Focuses on self-directed projects based on personal growth needs.

EDTC 608 Multimedia III (3.00)

Students work to master advanced media area of choice: video production, digital audio, gaming, 3D modeling, animation, photography, flash, or advanced graphic manipulation; and learn best practice uses in their curricular area.

EDTC 660 Methods of Teaching Instructional Tech I (3.00)

Studies the curriculum, methods and strategies for teaching, organizing and assessing learning in instructional technology, elementary (K-6) settings. Provides opportunity to design lessons, both daily and unit, and have experience teaching lessons in the classroom.

EDTC 690 Practicum in Instructional Technology (8.00 - 10.00)

Entails working in an elementary and secondary school setting full-time (300-600 contact hours) with a licensed teacher in an accredited school.

Applicants seeking a master's degree from the College for Professional Studies must possess a baccalaureate degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.

  • Application: Completed graduate application form
  • Application fee: $75.00 non-refundable application fee (waived for Regis University graduates)
  • Submit official degree-bearing transcript a U.S. regionally accredited institution
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.75 on degree-bearing transcript with option of supplying additional coursework transcripts
  • Critical analysis essay
  • Current résumé (optional)
  • One recommendation from your principal, a colleague or supervisor who knows your work in a professional setting
  • Copy of current teaching license or fingerprint card:** Copy of valid Colorado or Wyoming substitute emergency license or a fingerprint verification form will be accepted in lieu of the fingerprint card
  • Additional admission requirements apply to international students who are non-U.S. citizens
