Degree Overview

Ideal for those who already possess a teaching license and for professionals seeking additional credentials, our M.Ed. with an emphasis in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment explores curriculum foundation, culturally responsive instruction and curriculum implementation and evaluation. The program culminates in two capstone courses covering curriculum design in context and research in curriculum. Course work was designed by practicing professionals and is offered in both on campus and online formats.

The program can be completed in as little as two years. Current teachers not wishing to complete an entire Master of Education degree can take up to 9 credit hours as a non-degree seeking student. Plus, our Teacher Education program is nationally approved through the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC).

Licensed educators and paraprofessionals are eligible to receive a 10% preferred tuition discount for all Teacher Education courses at CPS. Contact an enrollment counselor at 800.944.7667 for details.

Total Degree Requirements: 30 credit hours
Foundational course requirements: 18 credit hours
Electives: 6 credit hours (students may choose two courses from pre-existing Education courses selected in consultation with their faculty advisor)
Capstone course requirements: 6 credit hours

Double and Second Specializations
Double Specialization
Students are encouraged to complete their M.Ed. degree with a double specialization. Requirements must be completed for each specialization selected, including all elective credits. Overlapping courses will be considered, though a minimum of 18 additional credits unique to the second specialization is required. Final requirements for the double specialization will be determined by your faculty advisor. Upon completion of all requirements, the degree and both specializations are posted to your official transcript and diploma.

Second Specialization
Students who have already graduated with their M.Ed. degree and wish to return for a second specialization from the non-licensure program must begin by submitting an application for readmission. Upon readmission, all requirements must be completed for the second specialization, including all elective credits. Overlapping course work from the student's original degree/specialization will be considered, though a minimum of 18 credits unique to the second specialization is required. Additionally, courses taken more than six years prior to the date of readmission may not be accepted. Final requirements for the second specialization will be determined by your faculty advisor. Upon completion of all requirements, the second specialization is posted to your official transcript and a certificate for the second specialization is awarded to you.

EDCI 600 - Curriculum Foundations

Provides foundational knowledge in the field of curriculum. Examines major philosophies on curriculum and explores the constructs of knowledge from which the philosophies derive.

EDCI 601 - Leadership & Coaching for CIA

Provides students with tools to become multifaceted teacher leaders. Recognizing the constantly evolving nature of the teaching profession, students explore ways to support teachers in their continuous learning and improvement.

EDCI 602 - Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Examines the intricacies of individualized teaching strategies that place students' culture at the heart of all teaching. Examines how such an emphasis can lead to valuable learning experiences for all learners.

EDCI 604 - Curriculum Implementation & Evaluation

Focuses on the praxis of theory and practice in curriculum studies. Develops, implements and evaluates a curriculum in an authentic setting.

EDCI 605 - Transformative Data & Assessment

Examines how teachers might use various data sources to inform their practice. Explores formative and summative methods, and demonstrates how standardized test data can inform both planning and instruction.

EDCI 609 - Curriculum Design in Context

A historical look at curriculum design, mindful of how the present rhetoric and norms in the US influence curriculum development. Addresses the theory and practice of curriculum design; balances personal philosophies with contemporary circumstances.

EDCI 610 - Capstone: Action Research in Curriculum

Combines theory and practice to create and implement a research-based curriculum project in an educational setting. This reflective practicum experience is the culminating course and will combine and apply knowledge gained from previous coursework.

EDRS 641 - Introduction to Educational Research

Provides students with an understanding of the fundamental concepts related to educational research. Discussions include quantitative and qualitative research, formats, data collection procedures, and strengths and weaknesses of both types of research. Additional topics include conducting literature reviews using online databases, evaluating the credibility of published sources, and synthesizing and writing reviews of literature.

EDRS 600 Ed Research & Critical Reflection I (3.00)

Introduces fundamental concepts related to quantitative and qualitative educational research emphasizing teacher generated action research. Covers evaluation and engagement in educational research. Critical reflection as action research will be explored as well.

Provides students with an understanding of the fundamental concepts related to educational research. Applicants seeking a master's degree from the College for Professional Studies must possess a baccalaureate degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.

  • Application: Completed graduate application form
  • Application fee: $75.00 non-refundable application fee (waived for Regis University graduates)
  • Submit official degree-bearing transcript a U.S. regionally accredited institution
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.75 on degree-bearing transcript with option of supplying additional coursework transcripts
  • Critical analysis essay
  • Current résumé (optional)
  • One recommendation from your principal, a colleague or supervisor who knows your work in a professional setting
  • Copy of current teaching license or fingerprint card:** Copy of valid Colorado or Wyoming substitute emergency license or a fingerprint verification form will be accepted in lieu of the fingerprint card
  • Additional admission requirements apply to international students who are non-U.S. citizens
  • Please remember: Applications that are incomplete and/or missing information will NOT be processed
