Commitment to Fostering a Safer Community

Regis University is committed to creating and maintaining a safe, respectful community. Within this respectful community, sexual violence will not be tolerated and support of survivors of sexual violence is a priority. Through campus and community resources, survivors of sexual assault may choose to access services to assist them as they move through the recovery process. Through campus disciplinary procedures and/or off-campus law enforcement agencies, perpetrators of sexual violence will be held accountable. Through campus programs and outreach events, all members of the Regis communty can learn how they can contribute to the elimination of sexual violence on our campus and in the community-at-large.

What You Need to Know as a Regis Student

Regis is committed to working toward eliminating sexual violence and supporting survivors of sexual violence. Part of this commitment involves taking reports of alleged sexual assault very seriously. Under Title IX, which mandates campuses to comply with certain federal regulations, the university is required to investigate and respond to all reports of sexual misconduct. As such information provided to university staff, including Resident Advisors and Peer Ministers must be reported to appropriate university officials. The university must initiate an official investigation if it has key information to proceed (e.g. time, date, location, and names of those involved in an alleged incident.) This investigation must take place even if the information is provided by a third party. The only university staff who are exempt from sharing such information are those listed below under “Confidential Resources.”

On-Campus Resources

If a student wants to talk with someone in a confidential manner, she or he has several on-campus options. Students may speak/consult with:

  • Counselors in the Office of Counseling and Personal Development (OCPD)
  • A priest

Information will be confidential in the context of a counselor-client or priest-parishioner relationship. Only these campus professionals are exempt from legal Title IX requirements that mandate university faculty and staff to report campus-involved sexual assaults to the Deputy Title IX Coordinator.

Community Resources

Students may contact the Rape Assistance and Awareness Program (RAAP), Denver‘s community rape crisis center, at 303.322.7273--24 hours a day/7 days a week. Trained volunteer advocates are on-call to answer any questions you may have and to provide emotional support at all times.

Options for Reporting Sexual Misconduct and Sexual Assault

Students may opt to pursue charges through the criminal system, the university system, or to pursue both processes concurrently. Regardless of the option chosen, under Title IX the University must initiate an administrative investigation.

Option 1: Filing a Criminal Complaint

Regis University encourages students to report sexual violations to the police. Incidents which occur on university property should be reported to the Denver Police Department (DPD). Off-campus incidents may or may not fall within the DPD jurisdiction. Campus Safety (303.458.4122) encourages students to contact them first so that they can help students through the process of contacting the appropriate police department.

Option 2: Filing a Complaint within the University Judicial System

To report sexual misconduct or assault when the alleged perpetrator is also a Regis student, you may choose to file a complaint within the university judicial system. You have the option to do this whether or not you choose to file a criminal complaint. Reports within the Regis system may be made to any University faculty/staff with the understanding that information will be reported to the Deputy Title IX Coordinator. Community Resources

Call 911: If you are injured and need emergency medical care or if you have concerns about your safety, call 911 immediately. You may also call 911 to have an officer respond quickly and come to your location to assist you.

Denver Police: If you have questions about filing a report and would like to speak with a police officer, you may call the Denver Police Non-Emergency number: 720.913.2000.

Please remember that Campus Safety is always willing to help you contact Denver Police or help you figure out the correct police department to contact if the assault happened outside of the Denver Police Department's jurisdiction.

On-Campus Resources

Medical
It is important for students who have been sexually assaulted to seek immediate medical attention. Students who choose (or think they may later choose) to pursue criminal charges must seek a forensic medical examination off-campus (please see below). Students who do not wish to pursue charges in the criminal system, may receive medical treatment at the Student Health Center (303.458.3558) during regular business hours. After-hours resources off-campus are provided below.

Counseling and Consultation
The Office of Counseling and Personal Development provides unlimited counseling sessions for all Regis College, Rueckert-Hartman, Biomedical Masters program, and Pharmacy students. OCPD is staffed by trained professionals who provide support to students dealing with a sexual assault. Students may schedule an appointment by calling 303.458.3507 or coming to OCPD, which is located in the Coors Life Directions Center. Crisis walk-in services are available Monday – Friday from 8 am – 5 pm. Mary Stall, Staff Psychologist and Sexual Assault Prevention Coordinator, is also available for consultation regarding any issues involving sexual assault. Pastoral Care

Community Resources

Medical
Students may seek treatment in an Emergency Department, Urgent Care Center, or through their private health care specialist. Please note that all Urgent Care Clinics and Hospitals are required to notify the police when someone seeks medical treatment for sexual assault. Police will be called to the ER/Urgent Care Clinic and will ask to speak with you. Also know that you can request a Victim Advocate to help you understand your options and the support available to you. Some hospitals have Victim Advocates on staff. You can also request that a Victim Advocate be provided to you by RAAP (Rape Assistance and Awareness Program).

Counseling and Support Services
The Rape Assistance and Awareness Program (RAAP) provides many services for survivors of sexual assault and sexual abuse. RAAP maintains a 24-hour crisis and support hotline (303.322.7273). Hotline staff provide emotional support and information about support services in the Denver area. RAAP also provides individual and group therapy, and volunteer advocates who can assist survivors through the legal process.

Denver Police Victim Assistance Unit
If you are involved in filing an official police report, the Victim Assistance Unit will appoint an advocate to help you and inform you of the many services provided to victims of crime. Phone: 720.913.6035 Denver Sexual Assault Interagency Council: The SAIC is a council with representatives from a spectrum of agencies including the Denver Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office, and service providers in the Denver area. The SAIC Coordinator can assist you in finding services and is a great resource if you have questions about any part of the response system. She is also available to coordinate and/or mediate between you and any Denver agency regarding concerns about your experience within the system.

Counseling
Referrals for private therapists and low-fee services in the community are available through the Office of Counseling and Personal Development (OCPD) and can be accessed on the OCPD website.

Campus Awareness

Each year there are multiple events sponsored by the Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Program, including bringing in outside speakers and programs that address sexual assault issues and on-campus outreach events that raise awareness about sexual assault. During Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which is in April, the university observes Denim Day, an outreach event held on the Quad. On this day, the continuing Clothesline Project serves to remind us of the survivors of sexual assault by exhibiting t-shirts made by and in honor of survivors of sexual violence.
